The Chinese are working feverishly to copy and reproduce ASML’s “older” DUV chip machines. DUV stands for Deep Ultraviolet. Will ASML also be able to maintain its global leadership in chip-machine manufacturing for the semiconductor industry in the future? Answer: As a European, I am not worried about the Chinese copying DUV machines. If they succeed, at best they can catch up with ASML. That, in turn, will motivate ASML to continue innovating in the DUV field. What does concern me, however, is that the West has cut China off from modern production technology. As a result, the Chinese are now highly motivated to reinvent chip production. I believe they will succeed.
